Mao's Journey to The West

Text, Images, Chart/ book size 8.4×12.2 cm, chart size 41.5×24.9 cm/ Mandarin/ 2024

The book starts with the obituary of Mao Zedong. It organizes Mao and the symbols of the Cultural Revolution, how they cross time and space. They shift from specific tools of political propaganda, into materials for global cultural appropriation. These symbols detach from the original context and the meanings become multi-layered. They are complex and no longer pure.

By organizing this process of "recontextualization", we re-examine these political totems. We look at their role in contemporary art and culture. We see how they continue to exert a complex influence.
